You want to be happy? Be it! Or what does it mean to be happy?

Ask anyone what they want most from life, and the most common answer you’ll hear will be, “I just want to be happy.” Why then are there so few happy people? Why is it that one of the fastest growing areas in the drug industry is antidepressants? Why are there so few people who consider themselves happy? Perhaps we look for happiness in all the wrong places?

Adam Jackson, who wrote the book “10 Secrets of Happiness” (Sophia Press, 2002), believes that we are all capable of becoming happy, no matter how much money we make, who we work, or where we live. Below are brief excerpts from this book.

Whatever the circumstances of our lives at the moment, we are capable not just of being happy, but of experiencing happiness in its entirety.

True happiness is not so much the absence of depression and suffering as the feeling of joy, satisfaction, and delight in life. This does not mean that one can or should be in constant ecstasy. After all, there are moments in our lives when we are faced with personal tragedies and losses, and these cannot help but cause quite natural sadness, grief, and disappointment. There are, however, means by which we can deal with these experiences, and very often we are able to turn life’s trials and tribulations into victories.

If we hope for the best outcome, more often than not we will achieve it! Happiness is a choice that can be made anytime, anywhere, everywhere. One can find a point of view from which every experience has a positive meaning. One must look for something positive in everything and everyone. In any difficult or stressful situation, you should ask yourself four questions: What is wonderful about this situation? What could be wonderful about it? What else is not perfect? What can we do to fix the situation and enjoy the process? What makes us unhappy or happy is our thoughts, not our external circumstances. By controlling our thoughts, we control our happiness.

The second secret of True Happiness is body power.

Movement affects the senses. Exercise alleviates stress and triggers chemical reactions in the body that make us feel good. Exercise should be done regularly – daily, if possible – for at least 30 minutes. Our feelings affect our posture. Cheerful body posture induces a feeling of happiness. Nutrition affects how we feel. We should avoid depressants such as coffee, tea, alcohol, sugary foods and artificial additives, and try to eat more fruits and vegetables, coarse grains and legumes.

The third secret of True Happiness is the power of living in the moment.

Happiness is not found in years, months, weeks, or even days, but in every moment. We can only get the best out of our lives if we get the best out of every moment. Memories are made up of special moments–accumulate as many of those moments as you can. Living in the present moment dispels regrets, overcomes anxiety, and reduces stress. Remember that each new day is a new beginning, a new life.

The fourth secret of True Happiness is the power of self-perception.

The eighth secret of True Happiness is the power of giving.

Happiness is not found in possessing and acquiring something for yourself. It lies in the ability to give and help others. The more joy and happiness we bring to others, the more we gain for ourselves. Every day we can create our own happiness by finding ways to give it to others.

The ninth secret of true happiness is the power of relationships.

Quality of life is determined by the quality of relationships with people. No one lives on a desert island. Everyone has a need for others. Close relationships make the good times even more enjoyable and the hard times easier. The joy shared is double the joy; the problem shared is half the problem. Treat each person as if you would never see them again.

The tenth secret of True Happiness is the power of faith.

Achieving this goal is varied, but the essence comes down to one, to the search for the gate to the home of his suzerain, who is the deity.

Like two, and sometimes many more, sides of the same coin. The relativity of views does not change the very essence of the subject. Happiness, it exists. But how to take it is a matter for each individual. To be an inveterate pragmatist and question everything and science, or a devout novice and take every word for the pure truth. This choice is up to each individual. But no matter how happiness is perceived, the consequences, importantly enough, remain the same in all cases. A sense of upliftment with simultaneous harmony within oneself. In which with every step you are ready to take off, and with every effort you are ready to turn the world upside down.
